For nature enthusiasts who dream of exploring exciting—even exotic—far-flung new places, the American Birding Expo is your ticket to travel! More than 100 exhibitors from more than 30 countries will be on hand at the 2018 Expo, September 21 to 23 in Oaks, Pennsylvania.
Birders love to travel, but so do nature enthusiasts interested in flowers, butterflies, mammals, sea life, and general natural history. During the past 15 years, a major trend has emerged with birding tours becoming more broadly focused, beyond just finding and watching birds. Thus, today nearly every tour company and destination at the Expo offer itineraries that include other activities and pursuits in addition to birding: photography, field sketching, journaling, hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, plus cultural, historical, and even culinary activities. Tours combining birds and wine, or birds and history, for example, have skyrocketed in popularity.
Some ecotourism companies have made a mark offering beginning birding tours and easy birding tours for those who enjoy a leisurely pace when bird watching.
Of course, if your goal is to see as many bird species as possible on whatever tour you join, you’ll find many opportunities to do so—and on any of the seven continents— among the exhibitors at the 2018 Expo.
In addition to a worldwide array of travel options, the 2018 American Birding Expo will feature birding-friendly cars and SUVs, outdoor clothing and gear, plus backyard products, bird and nature clubs, birding festivals, book and app publishers, artwork and gift items, and more. Keynote presentations and morning bird walks will be offered as well. Morning bird walks and expert talks and workshops are included in the admission price. With so much to offer, the Expo is often called “the world of birding in one place.”
The 2018 American Birding Expo will be held September 21 to 23 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania, about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Philadelphia. A weekend pass is just $10 (plus a small credit card fee) and can be purchased in advance on the Expo’s website, or at the door. Information on the Expo’s hours, special programs, and bird walks can be found at birdingexpo.com.
