One of North America’s fastest-growing outdoor pursuits is bird watching, or birding. There are millions of active birders in North America, many of whom regularly climb in their cars, vans, and SUVs to travel to a favorite, even far-flung birding hotspot. Thus, bird watchers have become discerning vehicle buyers.
In a recent poll by Bird Watcher’s Digest magazine, a random sampling of birding consumers was asked to name their favorite birding vehicle, and to describe why they preferred it over others makes and models. The answers match almost exactly to the mix of vehicles you’d see in the parking lot of a popular birding destination. Among the most popular birding vehicle brands were Subaru, Toyota, Honda, and Chrysler. Birders prefer vehicles with all-wheel drive, great visibility, room for gear and birding friends, and excellent gas mileage.
For the first time, the American Birding Expo will feature a selection of vehicles favored by birders. Display vehicles will be on the main floor of the Expo, which will be September 21 to 23, 2018 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Expo attendees will be able to sit (and imagine themselves birding) in vehicles from Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Chrysler, provided by local dealerships.
The American Birding Expo is the “world of birding in one place” and an excellent opportunity for people interested in nature travel, or ecotourism, to learn more about destinations near and far. More than 100 exhibitors from all over the world will be present offering optics, tours, gear, clothing, art and gift items, birding apps, bird feeders, and more. A weekend pass is just $10 (plus a small credit card fee) and can be purchased in advance on the Expo’s TicketLeap page, or at the door. Information on the Expo’s hours, special programs and bird walks can be found at birdingexpo.com.
